The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, has officially taken delivery of Five Hundred and Eighty (580) water pumps released to the Ministry by the Ghana Police Service, Tarkwa, following a directive by the District Court, Tarkwa.
On October 10, 2024, the Court ordered that the seized water pumps, which had been in the custody of the Police, be handed over to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) for onward distribution to farmers across the Northern Territory of Ghana.
The equipment was originally seized during a series of police operations on illegal mining activities on the concession of Golden Star Company Limited.
In line with government’s commitment to ensuring that confiscated assets of this nature are redirected for productive use, the Ministry has welcomed the release as a timely intervention to support agricultural development.
Hon. Eric Opoku expressed appreciation to the Ghana Police Service and the District Court, Tarkwa for their roles in ensuring that the seized items are put to good use. He emphasized that the redistribution of water pumps will boost irrigation farming, improve food production, and enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the Northern part of the country, where access to water for farming remains a challenge.
The Ministry will ensure that the pumps are equitably distributed to genuine farmers who need them most in consonance with government’s commitment to transform challenges into opportunities and to channel resources into productive ventures that will sustain national food security.
