The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, has called for the need for greater integration of cocoa-based products in menus in restaurants, hotels and recreational centres to drive economic growth in the cocoa industry.
In his opening remarks, at the Chocolatorium – The Business of Chocolate event aimed to spotlight the economic significance of cocoa in Ghana and foster discussions on harnessing its potential, Today, February 14, 2024, at the Accra Tourist Information Center in Accra, Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, underscored the pivotal role of cocoa in Ghana’s economy. He noted the recent surge in cocoa-based food consumption, attributing it to the concerted efforts of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), farmers, and stakeholders.
While acknowledging progress, Mr. Agyeman emphasized the need for continued growth, urging industry players, including restaurants and hotel owners, to incorporate more cocoa-based items into their menus. This, he stressed, would not only enrich culinary offerings but also bolster the cocoa value chain.
Echoing Mr. Agyeman’s sentiments, Dr. Emmanuel Opoku, Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of operations at Ghana Cocoa Board, emphasized the imperative of value addition in the cocoa industry. Dr. Opoku urged farmers, processors, and stakeholders to elevate cocoa-based products to a level where Ghana could reduce its reliance on exporting raw cocoa. He highlighted the broader scope of cocoa beyond chocolate, urging a shift in mindset towards diversifying cocoa-based produce.
Furthermore, Dr. Opoku reiterated Ghana Cocoa Board’s commitment to supporting farmers and producers through marketing initiatives, training programs, and advisory services. He also affirmed the board’s dedication to advancing the tourism industry, recognizing the symbiotic relationship between cocoa and tourism development.
The Chocolatorium – The Business of Chocolate event, organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority and Ghana Cocoa Board, created a platform for stakeholders to engage in dialogue on the cocoa industry’s potential as a lucrative business opportunity.
