Ghana Youth Guide, a non-governmental organization, under its “Strengthening Ghanaian Youth Through Climate Smart Agriculture and Civic Organizing (SGY – CSACO)” project, the workshop received funding support from DIB Denmark and Civil Society in Development, also based in Denmark.
organised a two-day training workshop in Tamale to bolster the capacity and skills of smallholder farmers in climate-smart agriculture. The primary goal was to enhance farmers’ understanding and resilience in climate change adaptation to bolster food production.
The training gathered beneficiary farmers from Savelugu and Tolon Districts in the Northern Region, including individuals with disabilities (PwDs).
During the training, Mr. Chentiwuni Salifu Abdul-Fataw, Executive Director of Ghana Youth Guide and Project Coordinator for SGY – CSACO, highlighted the urgent need for vulnerable communities and farmers to adopt improved agricultural practices amidst the impacts of climate change. The aim was to ensure sustainable food production in the country by equipping farmers with essential knowledge on land preparation techniques and the utilization of certified seeds to optimize production.
Mr. Basit Zakari, Tolon Director of the Department of Agriculture, led the training sessions, focusing on proper land preparation, scientifically approved seeds, and crop management techniques to enhance yields. He stressed the importance of selecting quality seeds, particularly those resistant to drought, and urged farmers to avoid indiscriminate use of agrochemicals, bush burning, deforestation, and water pollution to promote food production and alleviate poverty.
Mr. Shani Mahama, Industrial Liaison Director for Tamale Technical University, emphasized the critical role of stakeholder engagement in addressing climate change as a development challenge. He underscored the need for concerted efforts to educate smallholder farmers on best agricultural practices to achieve food security and contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 13, which calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by 2030.
