The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has assured consumers that Ghana has sufficient fuel stocks to meet domestic demand, despite mounting pressure on pump prices from rising international crude oil prices and the depreciation of the cedi.
The assurance comes as government implements a GH¢2-per-litre reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel to cushion consumers, ease transport costs and help moderate inflationary pressures.
The temporary intervention is expected to provide immediate relief to businesses and motorists that depend on diesel, even as authorities continue to monitor developments in the global petroleum market.
Speaking on Time with NPA, the Authority’s Director of Economic Regulation and Planning, Abass Ibrahim Tasunti, said the measure forms part of government’s broader efforts to shield consumers from external price shocks while maintaining economic stability.
“We believe that this temporary intervention will go a long way to reduce the burden on consumers and prevent hikes in transport fares whilst addressing the inflationary impact of rising fuel prices. It will be recalled that in April 2026 a similar intervention was made by reducing the margins to cushion consumers,”he said.
Beyond addressing price concerns, the NPA says there is no immediate risk to fuel availability in the country.
According to the Authority, existing petroleum stocks are adequate to satisfy domestic consumption, while additional fuel cargoes scheduled under Ghana’s import programme are expected to arrive in the coming days to further strengthen national reserves.
The regulator also indicated that domestic refining activity is contributing to supply resilience, with both Sentuo Oil Refinery and the Tema Oil Refinery continuing production to complement imported volumes.
Mr. Tasunti said the Authority remains vigilant and will continue to assess developments in the international oil market in collaboration with government to determine whether further interventions become necessary.
“The Authority will continue to monitor developments on the international market and together with government will make any necessary interventions when the need arises. We further wish to assure consumers that there are adequate stocks of petroleum products in the country to meet our consumption.”
“Based on our import plan, we also expect cargoes to be delivered in the coming days to add to existing stocks. Our domestic refinery, Sentuo, and Tema Oil Refinery are also actively producing to complement imports and strengthen our fuel stocks,” he stated.
The NPA’s assurance is expected to ease concerns over potential supply disruptions at a time when global crude oil prices and exchange rate volatility continue to shape fuel pricing dynamics.
While the government’s latest intervention offers temporary relief at the pump, industry observers say the medium-term outlook for fuel prices will remain largely dependent on international oil market trends and the performance of the Ghana cedi.
