Maize farmers in the Bono region fear the loss of their investment and livelihoods due to a maize glut.
Abandoned grain silos, low pricing and market has been the challenge in the harvesting season.
Data from the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) indicate, Ghana loses close to 30 percent of its grains and cereals, due to post harvest losses, and the situation is not different from what prevails at Wenchi.
Government silos for storing these grains have been abandoned, and the glut, has led to a reduction in the market price.

The 2018 Best Farmer in the Wenchi Municipal, Mr. Robert Nsiah lamented over the pain the farmers are going through over the maize glut.
The Secretary of the Wenchi Local Maize Aggregators, Kwame Adomako Asiedu appealed to the government to intervene.
A lecturer at the Department of Agriculture, Methodist University Ghana, Wenchi Campus, Fred Newman Coleman emphasized the need for knowledge on storage facilities and management of glut.

The Wenchi Municipal Agric Director, Mr. Emmanuel Kwabena Afful also implored the government to complete the abandoned warehouse at the Wenchi Buffer Stock zone which was being undertaken by the previous government under the one-district-one-warehouse initiative to boost food security.
